The Hickory / Pecan Details
Color & Grain
Pecan’s heartwood is a reddish brown that is often interlaced with darker brown stripes, and the sapwood is white with pink hues. Hickory, however, has a tan or reddish heartwood and a creamy-colored sapwood that is interlaced with fine brown banding. The Hickory grain is closed, somewhat coarse, and has some definition to it, while Pecan is open-grained with wavy or inconsistent patterns and textures.
Durability & Stability
A popular commercial wood due to its distinct and outstanding shock resistance, as well as the melding of characteristics such as its robustness, stiffness, hardness, and toughness. Hickory hardwood is about 11% less stable and slightly harder than Pecan. Pecan is 15% more stable and 41% harder than Red Oak.
